I stayed up late last night, after 10 PM, to listen to the results of the vote by IAM District 751 on Boeing’s revised contract offer. Local leadership resisted a vote, but national leadership forced them to give union members a say as part of a last-ditch effort to keep Boeing’s new 777X assembly line, as well as other projects, in the Pacific Northwest.
In what was probably one of the shortest press conferences ever, they admitted their members had voted “yes,” with a slim 51% majority. This guy was clearly not pleased. To paraphrase:
The politicians and media got involved in what truly was not their business to influence our members. But at least hopefully now Boeing will get off our backs.
I agree. Hopefully this can all blow over now and we Seattleites can go back to what we do best: drinking coffee and complaining about the weather.
