US Airways is still coming out with some incredible sale prices on its miles, even after merging with American Airlines and moving over to the oneworld Alliance. This week only they’re offering the chance to effectively buy miles for 1.135 cents each ($10 per 1,000 miles, plus 7.5% tax and $30 processing fee). Share miles with a family member or friend, and that friend receives up to 100% bonus miles.
This promotional price is only valid through April 13, and there are some ways to make this advantageous to you, too. If that friend shares half of them back, then you both come out ahead (or perhaps if you share miles with a spouse, you already control both accounts). Assuming Person A already has 50,000 miles in one account to start, he can share them with Person B, who receives a total of 100,000 miles. Person B can then share 50,000 of those miles with Person A. In the end, each ends up with 50,000 miles more than they started with.
US Airways still allows some creative award options. For example, you can book a business class award on Cathay Pacific from the U.S. to Hong Kong for only 90,000 miles round-trip. That means you can share 45,000 miles with a friend or family member and they’ll be able to fly business class to Asia on one of the best carriers in the world. You don’t have enough points to share? You can transfer them from another program like Starwood Preferred Guest, or contribute smaller amounts from multiple accounts (each account can receive a total of 50,000 bonus miles).
I might actually take them up on this offer for that exact purpose since my sister and I are planning a trip to Hong Kong. Furthermore, US Airways still lets you route via Europe on itineraries to Asia, and for a limited time you can continue to book with some former Star Alliance partners, too — but you can’t mix old and new partners on the same award.
